Investigation of the longitudinal-flexural resonating spindle in ultrasound-assisted grinding of SiCp/Al composites

Rotary ultrasonic machining is a cost-effective and precise method for hard brittle materials. Aiming at processing SiCp/Al composites, rotary grinding spindle proposed in the present study. Expressions were established to calculate displacement, rotation angle, bending moment, shear force of vibrating elements based on Mindlin moderately thick plate theory. Combining continuous boundary conditions with expressions, vibration model frequency equation longitudinal-flexural resonating transformer large load established. Then two transformers designed according equation. The resonant characteristics studied using finite element analysis, impedance resonance experiments. obtained results show that maximum deviation between design was 4.95%. Moreover, positions pitch circles 6.51%. It concluded designs have high accuracy. Finally, orthogonal single-factor experiments composites performed without ultrasound. introducing vibrations significantly reduces surface roughness while improving quality workpiece. study expected provide experimental fundamentals further improve structure spindle, optimize process variables ultrasound-assisted grinding, efficiency.
